Workshops

Our workshop schedule features classes in lindy hop, solo jazz and African dance.

Jump to:

Full Pass: Lindy Hop

Take eight hours of lindy hop classes with our international teacher lineup, plus up to four hours of Taster classes of your choice, and get entrance to all four parties. Please read our level descriptions carefully before registering, so that we can minimise changes at our auditions.

Level descriptions:

  1. Penguins: You've been dancing for up to a few months and are social dancing some basic lindy hop patterns. (No auditions required)
  2. Dassies: You've been dancing for a while, you're familiar with the social floor and are excited about expanding your vocabulary and exploring new ideas.
  3. Otters: You've been dancing for at least a few years, and you're itching to be challenged. You recognise that at this point, it's "back to basics" as well as time to work on more complex rhythms and patterns.

Auditions: More of a "level-check" than auditions, this is to ensure that the leader-follower ratios are balanced and that everyone is in the appropriate level. It's a quick, low-pressure process where participants will dance as a group with different partners, so that the teachers can check if anyone would benefit from being in a different level. Auditions will take place on Friday 19 March from 3pm, so please take time off to be there. Participants who are unable to attend the auditions will be placed in the level deemed by the teachers as most appropriate (not necessarily the level they registered for). In the rare case that your partner ends up in a lower level, you may choose to join them.

Full Pass: Solo Jazz

Take eight hours of solo jazz classes with our international teacher lineup, plus up to four hours of Taster classes of your choice, and get entrance to all four parties. The level at this track will be "intermediate" – i.e. you are familiar with a variety of solo jazz vocabulary, you have a few routines in your pocket, and you are comfortable improvising on the social floor.

Full Pass: African Dance

Take eight hours of African Dance classes with our guest teachers from South Africa and Mozambique, plus up to four hours of Taster classes of your choice, and get entrance to all four parties. No dance experience is needed to join these classes, but expect to sweat!

Taster Classes

Participants who are registered for a Full Pass will have access to taster classes, in addition to their primary track classes. Topics will be either under the "swing umbrella" (in the past, we've had balboa, blues, airsteps, switching, solo routines) or African dance. Dancers of all levels who are registered for a Full Pass may join the taster classes.

Beginner Lite

For those who are brand new to swing dancing, this is the track for you. Take a "lite" weekend package: six hours of beginner-friendly lindy hop classes with our Cape Town-based teachers, plus entrance to two of the four parties at Mother City Hop.
